Holding and letting go

This is a practice to explore, through the body, the subtle gesture of holding and letting go.

1. Arriving

Take a moment.
Sit or stand, however feels most comfortable, and feel your body here, now.

2. Tension and Release

Begin to slowly contract your body…
your fingers… your feet…
your legs… your hips… your belly…
your back… your chest… your shoulders…
your arms… your hands…
your face…
Let your whole body enter into tension.
And breathe into this shape.
One… two… three…
Then… let go.
Let all tension fall away.
Let the breath go too.
Pause for a moment.
Notice the difference.

3. Remaining

Stay with your breath for a few moments.
You know what it means to hold on.
You know what it means to let go.
And you can choose.
Moment by moment.

You can offer yourself this practice whenever you wish to remember the effort of holding on and the sense of freedom that comes with letting go.
